What comes after the thingÂ
is already part of the present
Â
After that thing: the interview/exam/wedding/
birth/death/divorce/dream,
the dust will settle. Your cellsÂ
will rearrange in seven days.Â
You will adapt in ten days.Â
Â
Some god sits monitoringÂ
our fictive lives in his holy book. Â
I like to count my hairs,Â
measure my nails,Â
poke my nose into my future.Â
I like to taste the messy plate clean,Â
keep it ready for the future.Â
Â
And the future is a scarecrow—
so when you feast on the presentÂ
notice how you will sit still Â
how you will send memes to your friendsÂ
how you will bake cinnamon rolls,Â
you will still fly, you will still readÂ
this is for certain:
the present is already half the future.
