A Food Writing Workshop with Devi Sastry & Sonakshi Srivastava by Usawa
About the Workshop
The kitchen asks us to make with our hands, each dish a collage of ingredients chopped, stirred, and served up. This writing workshop takes a similar, hands-on approach: participants are invited to create a food zine with recipes, reflections, and anything else that might be lingering in the fridge. We’ll consider new ways to think and write about food, reimagining our relationships to the kitchen.

Facilitators
Devi Sastry (she/her) is a writer, teacher, and editor from Bengaluru. Her life and her work revolve around food, family, and multilingualism. She holds an MFA in poetry from New York University, and she has taught creative and critical writing at NYU and Montclair State University. Her writing has been published or is forthcoming in Wasafiri, dhoop magazine, Poetry Northwest, Honey literary, and Bengaluru Review, among other publications. She works with multiple organisations creating learning materials to promote humanities education.
Sonakshi Srivastava (she/her) is the senior writing fellow (ELT) at Ashoka University, the translations editor at Usawa Literary Review, and an educational arm assistant at Asymptote. Her writings have generously been supported by the 2024 ASLE Translation Grant, Director’s Fellowship, Diverse Voices Fellowship, and the South Asia Speaks Fellowship. Her words may be found at Asymptote, The Locavore, Scroll, The Alipore Post, ASAP/Art, The Bilingual Window, Potluck Zine, Hakara, etc. When it comes to food, she’s got more appetite for writing than for eating!
