A Fragmented Flash Fiction Workshop

About the Workshop

Flash fiction is nothing but really short fiction. It’s like a snack–quick, delicious, and at times, it leaves one wanting for more. In this workshop, we will discuss a few flash fiction ideas. We’ll discuss narrative choice, voice, tone, context, subtext, character development, plot/storyline, and resolution (or anti-resolution) among other things. We’ll also observe its brevity, length of sentences, structure, syntax, openings and endings.

This is a generative flash fiction workshop. We’ll do both–understand the craft of flash fiction and generate new work. We might get time to briefly discuss the new story you’ll have written. Expect interactive exercises, flash fiction ideas, movement, writing sprints, and a good time above all!

About the Facilitator

Aekta Khubchandani is a writer and educator whose debut poetry manuscript, A Glass of Blue, was a finalist for the Rising Writer Prize 2024 (Autumn House Press). She is the winner of the Breakout Prize in Poetry (2022) and The Baltimore Review Winter Poetry Contest, and a finalist for Indiana Review’s Poetry Prize. Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and Best Microfiction. Her writing appears in journals including Tupelo Quarterly, The Offing, Penn Review, VIDA, Variant Lit, The Bombay Literary Review and elsewhere. Aekta holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School, New York, and has taught creative writing at Parsons School of Design, WriteOn NYC, and Girls Write Now, to name a few.

She is currently teaching the Multi-Genre Pathway at Sahab Collective, in Dubai.

The workshop took me out of my writing funk. I loved that the workshop demystified both flash & fragmented flash for me. I appreciated the exercises and the joint reading where we spent time to interpret the story Aekta picked out. It gave me a lot of insight on how one might go about writing a fragmented piece, especially what makes fragmented pieces not seem disparate / disconnected.

I found Aekta’s presence truly inspiring—her way of teaching, listening, and guiding was both articulate and warm. The exercise of revisiting fragmented flash fiction with a focus on tone, pacing, structure and narrative perspective helped me look at writing in a fresh, iterative way. The 2 hours felt so immersive that they went by in a flash — a sign of a truly engaging workshop. For me the workshop was joyful, light-hearted, and creatively fulfilling.

The workshop was wonderful! It was very engaging, useful and allowed for some much needed writing to happen. My 3 main takeaways: Finding the anchor in my writing, playing around with different elements of the narrative arc, sitting with a piece and asking the who, what, where, why and how questions.

Like every other workshop by Aekta, I loved the pace of Snackable. Her workshop never feels intimidating, nor does it leave you wandering aimlessly. Instead, it moves with a rhythm of explorations, questions, and discussions — almost like a poem (surprise, surprise!) I learnt plenty from the workshop, my three major takeaways are: - As a writer, you may set out with a fixed intention for your piece. But once it’s in the hands of a reader, their experience is beyond your control. Maybe they find action in every section, or only in the middle. Maybe they flip to the last part first. You’ll never know. And that unpredictability can be free-ing. It takes away the pressure of creating something “fixed” in a rigid format. - While the narrative arc is a familiar concept, it was fascinating to see how it could be applied within fragmented fiction. - Each verb, each phrase carries a purpose. they’re there for a reason. Which is why word choice becomes crucial: if the mood of the piece is dark, a word that signals joy can throw the whole tone off balance.
