The Language of Silence

About the Lecture

How do women writers navigate the politics and poetics of tNot everything on the page is written in words. This lecture investigates the literary uses of silence — the gaps between sentences, the things characters refuse to say, the white space that holds meaning. Drawing from feminist theory and close readings of contemporary prose and poetry, we will consider silence not as absence, but as a deliberate, powerful craft choice.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of restraint as a tool for emotional and political resonance in writing.he body on the page? This lecture examines fiction and memoir that center embodiment — from illness and desire to motherhood and aging — and asks how the body becomes both subject and style.

Through close readings of recent works and guided discussion, we will explore the craft decisions that allow writers to render bodily experience with precision, tenderness, and power.

About the Speaker

Kavita Bhandari is a writer and literary critic whose essays on silence, interiority, and women’s narratives have appeared in leading literary magazines.
